 ‘What did Christ accomplish?’
--John 17:1-4--

 1. He brought in an everlasting righteousness for us (Dan. 9:24).  By his life of submission and obedience to the law of God as a man, the Son of God established righteousness in the earth. This righteousness was performed by Christ as our Representative before God.  It is this righteousness, performed by Christ, which God imputes to believers. He declares us righteous by virtue of Christ’s righteousness for us. We have no righteousness of our own, but we are made righteous before God in Christ.

2. Christ satisfied the justice of God as our Substitute.  God demands the death of every transgressor.  Every sinner must suffer the infinite wrath of God for sin. ‘The wages of sin is death’ (Rom. 6:23).  And God always pays men their wages. ‘The soul that sinneth, it shall die’ (Ez. 18:20).  When Christ hung upon the cross he died under the penalty of the law.  He died as the object of God’s wrath, because he was made to be sin for us.  And by his death, he satisfied the claims of justice against us, so that those for whom he died are no longer under the sentence of death.

 3. Jesus Christ our Savior has put away the sins of his people by the sacrifice of himself.  He took our sins upon himself and made them his own.  Dying under the penalty of sin for us, Christ put away our sins.  He drowned them in his precious blood.  In so far as the law and justice of God are concerned, our sins, the sins of all who believe, the sins of God’s elect do not exist!  In Christ we are freed from all sin.  ‘Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin’ (Rom. 4:8).

4. By his life and by his death, the Lord Jesus Christ secured and guaranteed the eternal salvation of his people.  God will save every sinner for whom Christ died upon the cross.   Not one of God’s elect will perish.  By his life of righteousness as our Representative Christ merited the blessings of God for us, and by his sin-atoning death as our Substitute he silenced the claims of justice against us. All for whom Christ died shall live forever in glory.

Pastor Don Fortner

To say that God loves those who go to eternal torment with the same love as those who go to eternal bliss makes the love of God absolutely meaningless.  To say that the blood of Jesus Christ was shed for those who go to hell as well as those who go to heaven makes the blood of Jesus Christ absolutely meaningless.  To say that Jesus Christ died for those who go out into eternity hating God as well as those who leave this world with a sincere, God-given love for Jesus Christ, the true and living God, is to make the death of Christ absolutely meaningless.  Brethren, those who believe in universal redemption DO NOT believe that Jesus Christ is their Redeemer.  They rule out the love of God, the blood of Christ, and the death of Christ.  WHAT ARE THEY CLINGING TO?  Their sinful, polluted, corrupt so-called free will.  The God of all grace tells us this in Romans 9:15 - 16: “.. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.  SO THEN it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.”  WHO DO WE BELIEVE?  False preachers, who call God a liar?  OR GOD, WHO CANNOT LIE?  While He was here on this earth, our Lord Jesus told some self-righteous false religionists: “He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God” (John 8:47).

“Some preachers preach Christ.  Other preachers preach other things.  This is true because all preachers preach what is precious to them and their hearers.  Christ is ‘rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious’ (1 Peter 2:4).  Not only is Christ precious to God, but also “to you who believe, Christ is precious” (v.7).  Therefore, Christ’s people desire to hear Christ preached, and Christ’s preachers preach Christ.”

It is the sincere delight of God’s ordained ministers to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and it is the sincere delight of the enlightened saints of God to hear that same Gospel.  WHY?  “Unto you therefore which believe he (Christ) is precious” (1 Peter 2:7).                   Pastor

A Fellowship Dinner is scheduled for this afternoon following this morning’s worship service.  Please join us.

Our worship service for this evening, and our Friday Night Bible Study for this week, have been cancelled.

A sincere “THANK YOU” to our conference preachers for your labor of love in preparing and delivering the Gospel messages we have had the honor of hearing.  Also, in behalf of this little church family here at Rescue, we are so thankful to all of you who were able to attend this year’s summer conference.  May our Lord Jesus be pleased to give you a safe and uneventful trip back to your homes.

“Eternal life is to know the living God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent.  It is to have the LIFE of Christ, the PRESENCE of Christ, the SPIRIT and MIND of Christ, and the very GLORY of Christ begotten, created, and formed in us.  CHRIST IN YOU is the hope of glory.  Until the miracle of grace is performed, our religion is but a form of godliness.”

“Christ did not die on the cross trying to save his people.  HE DIED SAVING HIS PEOPLE!  He was given the name Jesus for that very purpose:  For he shall save his people from their sins (Matt 1:21).  If you believe that God loves every one and died for everyone, then your idol is a failure as all idols are.  The God of scripture is not trying to do anything. HE IS ACCOMPLISHING HIS PURPOSE (Isa. 14:27).  He willingly became a man, laid down his life, paying the price of sin, for his sheep (John 10:15).  We have all sinned and came short of the glory of God; we all deserve the wrath to come, yet there is a people, chosen before the world was (Eph 1:4), who are to be the recipients’ of His Love.

Because he first loved us, we have a substitute.  One who has paid the price for us, one who stood in our place.  One who willingly received our just reward.  One who laid down his life for us.  No man taketh it from him (John 10:18).

Dear reader, I pray that The Lord of Glory is Your Substitute. Today is the day of salvation!  Believe on the LORD JESUS CHRIST and thou shalt be saved.”

“All God’s people, sooner or later, are brought to this point - to see that God has a ‘people’, a ‘peculiar people’, a people separate from the world, a people whom He has ‘formed for Himself that they should show forth His praise.’

Election, sooner or later, is riveted in the hearts of God’s people. And a man that lives and dies in enmity against this blessed doctrine, lives and dies in his sins; and if he dies in enmity, he will be damned in that enmity. Every child of God is brought, sooner or later, to see that God has a people; and the longing desire of every living soul is to be manifested as one of that people.

There are no cavillings against election after God has broken a man down to nothing. There may be cavillings against it until we are stripped of all; but when a man is stripped of all, made a beggar, a bankrupt, a pauper, a poor needy insolvent with a huge debt and nothing wherewith to pay, then election is made manifest in that man’s conscience, because he feels that unless God has chosen him from eternity, he will never see His face in glory.”

"What saddens me most of all about my own sin is that it dishonors my Savior. And it also saddens me that it might cause those who don't know Christ to think less of Him.

However, my sin is not a legitimate excuse for anyone to reject God's Son! For God now commands 'all men every where to repent' and 'believe on the Lord Jesus Christ!' (Acts 17:30, 16:31)

And 'he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead' (Acts 17:31)."

Michael Smith

“It is only when we know and believe the love that God hath to us, that we  come to  cherish  any corresponding  emotion to Him. Our love is secondary,  His is  primary; ours is  reflection,  His the original  beam; ours is echo, His the mother-tone.”

Alexander Maclaren

“When asked of the ground of hope that the false professor has of salvation, he looks back to some act or experience or inward to some imagined goodness for hope. But the believer only looks outward and upward by faith to Christ and His effectual sacrifice!”

“To those who truly believe, those who have this precious faith, ‘HE IS PRECIOUS’ (1 Peter 2:7).  This is one way I know that God has given me this faith.  The faith which I have will not permit me to look to, trust in, rest upon, live upon, or have any hope in anyone but Christ, and Christ alone!  Unto me ‘HE IS PRESIOUS!’

Pastor Maurice Montgomery

True faith renounces all works of the flesh, and rests only in the perfect redeeming work of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of His people.  MOREOVER, true faith will not allow God’s enlightened children to assemble with any religious organization that does not look to Christ, AND CHRIST ALONE, for acceptance into God’s eternal kingdom.
