CLOSING HYMN

“Great Is Thy Faithfulness”      pg43

Just before our Lord Jesus laid down His life for His sheep, He said: “It is finished.”  What did He mean by those words?  I can tell you what He did not mean:  He didn’t mean that He had done all that He could, and the rest was up to hell-deserving sinners.  He didn’t mean He had come to do His Father’s will, and then put the eternal destiny of His blood-bought sheep into the hands of their so-called free will.  NO!  He meant that He had come to do His Father’s will, “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Heb. 10:9 - 10).  He meant that we, all of His sheep, even when we were His enemies, would be reconciled to God by His death (Rom. 5:10).  He meant that He was being delivered for the offences of His promised children and would be raised again for their justification (Rom. 4:25).  He meant that through His finished work, God would justify all of His elect so that nothing could be laid to their charge (Rom. 8:32 - 34).  He meant that “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus …” (Rom. 8:1) because He, BY HIMSELF, purged our sins (Heb. 1:3) from God’s sight forever (Heb. 10:14 - 17).

In Christ

“Often someone asks what ‘position’ do you hold on a particular doctrine, such as particular redemption, or the depravity of man. But the word of God never tells us to come to a position, but to a person to Christ Jesus the Lord.  He himself said; ‘Come unto me’; again; ‘all that the Father gives me shall come unto me’, ‘no man cometh unto the Father but by me’.

The scriptures speak of believers being ‘In Christ’ in several places.  This is the place I want to be found - In Christ.  This is the only place where a sinner can have a secure position from sin, death, hell, and the judgment and wrath of God.  When a sinner comes to Christ, trusts Christ and learns that he was chosen In Christ before the foundation of the world, then he has the most blessed position a poor sinner can have.

Justified! Accepted! Righteous! Where?  Before God, who is holy and inhabits eternity.  Before Him who knows our thoughts afar off.  Before Him who knows the heart. ‘Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.’ How?  ‘It is Christ that died, yea rather is risen again, who sitteth at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us’ (Rom. 8:33-34).”
