A searching question and a satisfying answer

--John 6:66 - 69--

"Our Lord had pressed upon his hearers the great truths of the gospel.  He told them plainly that he was God the eternal Son. He taught them man's complete spiritual depravity and inability. He explained to them the fact that salvation is altogether by God's sovereign grace.  And he insisted that no man is born again except that man who is joined to Christ by a living and vital union of faith.  But those men who followed Christ only for material gain, or out of a religious curiosity, or because they had eaten the miraculously produced loaves, were offended at his doctrine.  And 'from that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him'.

Then our Lord turned to the twelve and asked this searching question: 'Will ye also go away?'  Now I put the question to you.  Many have gone away.  It is likely that many more will yet do so.  I fear that some who appear to be devoted today might become offended because of the gospel tomorrow and go back, go back to the world's way.  Will you?

But this I know, those who are truly born again, those who have experienced the grace of God, been redeemed by the blood of Christ and been called to life by the Holy Spirit cannot go away.  Those who truly know Christ can never leave him.  We know our desperate need of him.  Therefore God's elect return with this satisfying answer'Lord, to whom shall we go?'  Sometimes we are tempted and the world tugs hard at our hearts.  But we know that no one can satisfy our need and our heart's desire but Christ.  Christ alone has the words of eternal life.  He is the life itself and the way to life.  We believe and are sure that Jesus of Nazareth is that Christ whom God has sent. He is God's anointed Prophet, Priest and King.  He is the promised Redeemer.  He is the Son of the living God.  The law cannot help us. The world cannot satisfy us.  We must cling to Christ.  He is all."

The Awful Sin of Judas

--Matthew 26: 14-15--

"Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, What shall ye give me, and I will deliver him (Jesus) unto  you?  And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver."

"Ever since he 'betrayed innocent blood', selling the Lord Jesus Christ to the highest bidder, the name Judas has been a byword, symbolic of the worst form of treachery and deceit known to man.  However, though he stands out in history as unique and his crime the most sinister, his sin is still among us.

The man who identifies with and or supports in any way preachers, churches, and ministries, which in their preaching, deliver Christ into the hands of His enemies to do with Him as they will, auctioning Him off to the sinful crowd, and selling Him out at a price agreeable to fallen men's sinful will is a Judas.

Any preacher or pastor, who to get his people to be faithful, frightens them with the hounds of hell, drives them with the whip of the law, or bribes them with promises of exalted positions and great rewards in heaven is a Judas.

Is the Lord Jesus Christ such an  ugly, unattractive, undesirable husband that his bride will not love nor serve him unless she is driven or bribed?  What a dishonoring thought!  What a blasphemous thought!  Those who truly know the Lord Jesus love him.  Those who love the Lord Jesus desire to honor and serve him.  Those who desire to honor and serve him do so as willing and thankful servants constrained by the knowledge of his great love for them and the love which they in return have for him.  To all who know him, Christ is altogether lovely and desired above any other and all else."

It is just as impossible for one for whom Christ redeemed to die in their sins as it is for hell-deserving sinners to deliver themselves from their sins.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

"Cannot I do with you as this potter?" (Jeremiah 2:1-10)

"God's glorious sovereignty is most clearly revealed in His works of grace (Romans 8:28-34; 9:1-24; Ephesians 1:3-14). — I rejoice to know that God is sovereign in creation and in providence, — that He is sovereign and in control of all men and devils, kings and paupers.  I am thankful that my heavenly Father rules all the thoughts and deeds of men, all the elements, events, and influences of the universe.  I cannot tell you how that fact rejoices this man's heart.  But, above all else, I rejoice in the glorious revelation of God's sovereignty in the exercise of His grace."

"Nothing will foster godly fear like a recognition of the sovereign majesty of God."

"Salvation is the most beautiful word that a lost condemned sinner could ever hear.  It includes all the blessings of grace, and all the blessings of glory.  It is the washing of our consciences from guilt, the redemption of our souls from the curse of the Law, the renewing of our heart by the Spirit of God, and the freedom of our spirits from the power and dominion of sin.  It is to be loved and chosen by God, justified in Christ, born again by the Holy Spirit, pardoned of all wrong doing, received into the family of God, accepted in the beloved. It is to be an heir of God, joint heir with Christ.  If I am saved, I have all wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption in Christ."

"SALVATION BY GRACE DESTROYS ALL ROOM FOR BOASTING.  No man is sound on grace who boasts of anything he has ever done or can do as the ground of his salvation.  If your idea of salvation allows you to boast you may be sure it is wrong.  No man can even boast of his repentance and faith, for they are the gifts of His (God's) grace.  See Acts 5:31; 11:38; Acts 11:17; 1 Cor. 3:5; Eph. 1:19; 1 John 5:4.  All of our graces are fruit of the Spirit.  Read Gal. 5:22, and 23."

                                              FOUL WEATHER PROFESSIONS

"Noah went into the ark BEFORE ONE DROP OF WATER FELL!  If he had waited until the rain commenced, he would have been joined by thousands of false converts.  True faith believes the promises of God and the warnings of God BEFORE they come to pass.  A refuge built or entered during the storm is usually forsaken when the sun shines again.  Be wary of those who seek the Lord when their flesh is pained."

Election 0r Atheism — No Middle Ground (Romans 9:16-18)

"If you receive the Bible as the Word of God, you have no choice; you must believe the doctrine of election.  If you believe the Bible, you have to take it all as the Word of God.  You cannot say, 'I believe what the Bible teaches about heaven; but I just cannot accept the idea of hell.' You cannot say, 'I believe in God; but I simply cannot believe in election.'  Election is so much a part of divine truth, that it cannot be expunged from the Book of God without completely destroying the Word of God.  It is taught in Genesis, in Revelation, and everywhere between. To deny the doctrine of election is to deny the Word of God, reject the religion of Jesus Christ, and to engage in the practice of utter atheism; for the denial of election is the denial of the God of election!

Yes, you read that right.  I said the denial of election is a denial of God!  It is a denial of His sovereignty.  It denies that God has the right to do with His own what He will. Those who deny election deny God's government of the world and of His right to govern."

Every believer is robed in the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ.  By His perfect obedience unto death, even the death of the cross, our Blessed Redeemer, our Perfect Savior, established a righteousness for His chosen people that makes every believer as righteous as the Spotless Lamb of God!  God sees no iniquity in His chosen, blood-bought children.  God's preachers are to say to the righteous that it shall be well with them (Isaiah 3:10).  As long as Jesus Christ our Blessed Surety is on His Sovereign Throne of Power, it will ALWAYS be well with those who are in Him.

"Faith in Christ is NOT TO WORK but to cease from our labor and to rest in Him for all things.  Faith in Christ is NOT TO DO ANYTHING, but to believe and own that ALL IS DONE in Him, by Him and is imputed to us so fully that we are rewarded as if we did it ourselves!"

Pastor Henry Mahan
